With a sleek post-bop quintet featuring trumpeterWoody Shaw, pianistKenny Barron, bassistJan Arnet, and drummerBilly Higgins, the Texas-born saxophonist slices through a set of compelling bandmember originals including Barronâs sinuous tune âGichiâ and Shawâs lilting waltz âIn a Capricornian Way,â as well as Ervinâs lovely ballad âLynnâs Tuneâ and the hard-swinging âDen Tex,â named for his hometown of Denison.
